Job Description
The Director of Music Publishing, acting as an independent contractor without subordination, will be responsible for leading the strategy and operations of the editorial team, ensuring the growth and efficient monetization of the composition catalog. This role involves managing key relationships with composers, publishers, collective management organizations, and digital platforms to optimize rights administration, royalty collection, and business opportunities. The position is 100% remote, with a 20% possibility of travel, requiring a valid U.S. visa. Preferably, the candidate should be based in Mexico or the U.S.
Functions and Responsibilities
- Administration and Monetization of the CatalogDevelop publishing strategies to maximize the value of the editorial catalog. Manage the administration and collection of royalties through collective management organizations (SACM, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, etc.) and digital platforms. Implement efficient processes for managing rights and metadata of the catalog.
- Relationships with Societies and EntitiesNegotiate and manage publishing, co-publishing, and sub-publishing agreements with partners in Mexico, the U.S., and other key markets. Develop strategic relationships with composers, artists, producers, labels, and digital platforms. Represent the company at industry forums, conferences, and events.
- Synchronization and Expansion StrategyIdentify synchronization and licensing opportunities for films, series, commercials, video games, and other media. Analyze market trends and new monetization opportunities on digital platforms. Coordinate with internal A&R, marketing, and distribution teams to optimize catalog exploitation.
- Contract Supervision and ComplianceEnsure compliance with publishing contracts and agreements. Oversee compliance with copyright regulations in Mexico and the U.S. Evaluate catalog performance and propose growth strategies.
- Leadership and Strategic OversightSupervise and optimize rights and royalty management processes. Stay updated on changes in copyright regulations and industry trends. Address operational or strategic challenges with actionable solutions.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5+ years in music publishing, rights management, or editorial roles within the music industry.
- Fluent English (spoken and written); Spanish fluency assumed (Portuguese is a plus).
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business, Music Business, Communications, or related fields. A Master’s or specialization in Music Business or related areas is desirable.
- Experience in negotiating and managing publishing agreements.
- Knowledge of digital platforms and their impact on royalty distribution.
- Advanced understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws in Mexico and the U.S.
- Experience with collective management organizations (SACM, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, etc.).
- Proficiency in negotiating and drafting editorial agreements (publishing, co-publishing, sub-publishing, and synchronization).
- Familiarity with digital distribution and monetization platforms (e.g., YouTube Content ID, Spotify Publishing Analytics, Apple Music for Publishers).
- Ability to analyze royalty reports, metadata, and market trends.
- Proficiency with editorial management tools and software (e.g., Music Maestro, DISCO).
- Strong interpersonal skills for closing beneficial deals, building key alliances, and guiding projects with a long-term vision.
