Job Description
The New York Times Audio team is building on the success and journalism of “The Daily” to bring more of our newsroom reporting to air in a new show, The Headlines.
The producer will work alongside the editors, producers and the host to create a sound-rich show highlighting the big news stories of the day and finding the perfect audio to help tell those stories. The show’s team will use the journalistic rigor and the power of The Times’ unique reporting to deliver listeners U.S. and global news, as well as enterprise and exclusive New York Times stories.
The producer must have a strong understanding of the news, experience structuring stories and exceptional audio production skills. Because this show includes both scripted and non-narrated stories, producers should have experience leading interviews to get the best tape possible and also have experience writing copy for audio. Producers on the show are expected to build the show and coach the host on a tight deadline.
Skills And Responsibilities
  • Monitors the news cycle to help make story selections alongside the team
  • Focuses on finding the best angle on the big news stories of the day in sophisticated, distinctive ways
  • Works with editors and host on writing copy as needed
  • Works with editor to coach host in studio
  • Adheres to quick turnaround deadlines and demonstrates a hunger for daily news
  • Consistently selects the best available tape from interviews and news clips, and cuts it in a logical sequence with clear technical skill
  • Builds stories in Pro Tools, performs basic mixing
  • Uses editorial judgment with the direction of the editors that’s reflective of Times mission and principles

Requirements

Basic Qualifications
  • At least 3 years experience in audio production
  • Proficiency with audio editing software, like ProTools
Preferred Qualifications
  • Daily news experience and a passion for daily news
  • Knowledge across multiple disciplines such as politics, business, science, etc.
  • Experience working with a host on coaching
  • An eagerness to create the best work possible
  • An attention to detail, even under tight time constraints.
  • Experience in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Belief in The New York Times’ mission

The annual base pay range for this role is between $74,816.01 and $90,000.00.
