Description

BCMG’s Head of Development plays a key role in enabling the company to realise its overall artistic, commissioning, performance and learning programme. The role includes strategic development of the company’s fundraising programme, which currently focuses on public funding, charitable trusts, and major and individual donors. It covers the identification and recruitment of new partners and stakeholders; the management of existing key stakeholder relationships with public, private and partnership funders of BCMG’s work; communications connected to the development role both externally and internally; and a wider contribution to the development of specific projects of the company.
Responsibilities:
STRATEGIC
  • Member of the Strategic Management Team
  • Set and achieve ambitious fundraising goals which allow BCMG to fulfil its ambitious plans, alongside creating and managing a long-term fundraising strategy to support BCMG’s programme and infrastructure
  • Contribute to the Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation business planning and planning for other grant opportunities as they arise from Arts Council England
  • Work with the Artistic Director and Chair on the development of revenue funding
  • Work with the Artistic Director and Director of Learning to develop projects for fundraising from BCMG’s future programme plans
  • Identify future key partners and stakeholders including internationally
  • Contribute to the advocacy of BCMG’s mission and programme externally
  • Contribute to the budget-planning process
  • Contribute to a company ethos which recognises the importance of reaching a diverse audience, and is aware of barriers to participation
  • Member of Board subcommittees and working groups as required
OPERATIONAL
  • Manage BCMG’s relationship with key public funders Arts Council England, maximising revenue and project funding opportunities
  • Raise core and project funds from charitable trusts and foundations
  • Ensure proper reporting and stewardship for all charitable donations
  • Develop major and individual donors for BCMG’s work, including Sound Investment
  • Raise income in collaboration with key partner organisations where appropriate
  • Devise and manage events for current and prospective donors and partners
  • Manage the work and professional development of the Development Coordinator, including completion of annual appraisals, monitoring of annual leave, etc.
COMMUNICATIONS
  • Relationship and network-building with BCMG’s potential and existing donors
  • Engage donors with the company’s work as a whole as well as with specific projects that require additional funding
  • Facilitate relationship-building between donors and the BCMG team of staff, musicians and Board
  • Engage BCMG’s Board with the development function, by reporting quarterly to Board meetings and contributing to the general advocacy of BCMG’s work
GENERAL
  • Represent BCMG on professional bodies and networks
  • Work outside normal office hours from time to time (e.g at rehearsals, concerts, projects) for which time off in lieu may be taken in agreement with the Executive Director

  • An understanding of Birmingham and the West Midlands and its diverse communities
  • A passion for creativity and the arts
  • Proven track record of successful grant bid-writing in the charity sector
  • Experience in researching and identifying a wide range of funders
  • Experience managing staff and/or leading a project team
  • Ability to effectively work with individuals in leadership positions, such as Board members, funders/donors, and community leaders
  • Self-motivated and self-directing, able to identify, organise and prioritise projects/work
  • Planning and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal English
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
